In the dark times of communism, Father Jerzy Popiełuszko consciously referred to the teachings of John Paul II. Alongside the words of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, the papal teachings became an important, almost indispensable element of his sermons in Warsaw’s Żoliborz.
Probably they never spoke to each other in life. a face-to-face conversation was supposed to have taken place in Warsaw in 1983, during John Paul II’s second pilgrimage to his fatherland. However, by decision of the then government, Fr. Popiełuszko was not issued a pass. The Office for Religious Affairs justified its decision with alleged security reasons.
