When I was on holiday in France several years ago, I spotted a “Polish” corner in the neo-Gothic church of St. Vincent de Paul, in the very centre of Marseille. Standing there was a statue of Saint John Paul II, and two large photos were hung on the wall next to it. One of them showed the Polish Pope, but I was surprised by the second photo, placed above it. Here, there was the figure of Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko. “Why here,” I wondered, “on the edge of the Côte d’Azur?” Today, when I look at the map prepared by the Museum and Centre for the Documentation of the Life and Cult of Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko, the presence of a photo of the blessed priest in Marseille does not seem unusual to me.
