The gospel according to Fr. Jerzy

“The actors of the drama and trial of Christ are still alive,” said Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko in his homily during the Mass for the Fatherland on 26th September 1982. “Only their names and faces have changed, the dates and places of their births have changed.”

Despite changing eras, borders and ways of life, Saints and Blesseds of all generations follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Their voice, sometimes simple, sometimes learned, cuts across the world in which they live. They are silenced, considered mad, put in prison, killed. However, the voice cannot be killed, just as truth and love cannot be killed, just as God cannot be killed. It was about them that Jesus said: “If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own. But because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you” (John 15:19). From a short perspective, the mission of the saints and blessed is often perceived in political, social and cultural terms. The immortal light of the Gospel that shines through their lives often becomes more visible as generations pass and years pass. They all have one thing in common – their similarity to Jesus Christ, their Lord and Saviour.
